Miniature vapor-cell atomic-frequency references

چکیده
We propose a sub-millimeter-scale vapor-cell atomic-frequency reference based on a micromachined vapor cell, all-optical excitation, and advanced diode-laser technology. We analyze theoretically the performance of such a device as a function of cell size. Initial measurements on small-scale vapor cells support the theoretical treatment. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1494115#

Microfabricated Atomic Clocks at Nist
This paper presents the latest progress in the development, fabrication, and characterization of microfabricated atomic frequency references at NIST. With volumes below 10 mm the physics packages contain the complete integrated assembly for probing the ground-state hyperfine splitting frequency of the alkali atoms by coherent population trapping (CPT). This technique allows for a simple and com...
متن کاملOptical pumping in a microfabricated Rb vapor cell using a microfabricated Rb discharge light source
Miniature (<few cm) vapor-cell based devices using optical pumping of alkali atoms, such as atomic clocks and magnetometers, today mostly employ vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers as pump light sources. Here, we report on the demonstration of optical pumping in a microfabricated alkali vapor resonance cell using (1) a microfabricated Rb discharge lamp light source, as well as (2) a convent...
متن کاملMiniature atomic scalar magnetometer for space based on the rubidium isotope 87Rb
A miniature atomic scalar magnetometer based on the rubidium isotope 87Rb was developed for operation in space. The instrument design implements both Mx and Mz mode operation and leverages a novel microelectromechanical system (MEMS) fabricated vapor cell and a custom silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) integrated circuit. The vapor cell has a volume of only...
متن کامل22.51 Quantum Theory of Radiation Interactions, 2012 Midterm
In this mid-term we will study the dynamics of an atomic clock, mF which is one of the applications of David Wineland’s research (No bel prize in physics 2012). We consider a simplified (and sometime inaccurate) model of a vapor-cell atomic clock . Light from a lamp passes through a vapor of rubidium atoms housed in a glass cell and is detected by a photodiode. The light intensity transmitted ...
متن کاملRobust Optical Design of Angled Multilayer Dielectric Mirrors Optimized for Rubidium Vapor Cell Return Reflection
This paper reports on the design and implementation of thin film multilayer dielectric to form Bragg reflectors on the sidewalls of micromachined atomic cells. Due to deposition shadowing, significant variations in the thicknesses of the thin films are encountered when the layers are deposited using PECVD. These gradients in thickness may limit optical performance of the reflector in atomic cel...
